Tuesday, 30 March 2010 - strong>“Admiral Cochrane – Founder of the Chilean & Argentinian Navies” Speaker - Mr. H. Doyle
Admiral Lord Cochrane has an Ayrshire connection in that he inherited the title Earl of Dundonald. As the family had lost their money, he entered the Navy. He was very able but outspoken. He was a contempory of Nelson and led many daring attacks during the Napolionic wars. He had a spell in Parliament and also in prison. He was headhumted to take over the embrionic Chilean Navy and four years later took over the Greek Navy.
Our Speaker, Mr Doyle, taught mathematics but his interest in History led him to do some research into a local house in Hamilton where it appears that Lord Cochrane was born.

They are eager to ascertain public response to their plans prior to submitting an application for planning approval.
This presentation does not constitute an endorsement by the West Kilbride Amenity (Civic) Society. We do, however, feel that it provides an unusual opportunity as a pre-event forum for local residents.
This presentation is open to all Society members and concerned local residents.
Monday, 07 July 2008 - The Amenity Society pursues its aims by means of publications, lectures and meetings, promotion of schemes of a charitable or conservation nature and by monitoring and supporting plans and schemes which positively contribute to civic awareness and improvement of quality of life in the area. Conversely, the Society offers comment on schemes which may adversely affect the community. During the summer, the Society arranges group visits to interesting or historic buildings, gardens and sites. In the winter, visiting lecturers make presentations of a broad spectrum of topics of interest on a monthly basis. All general meetings and presentations are held in the West Kilbride Community Centre, Corse Street, at 7:30 PM on the last Tuesday of the month. Tea/cofee and conversation are available in the Day Room after the meeting.
